Kelp is an aquatic plant found in Minecraft, naturally generating in most ocean biomes, excluding frozen, deep frozen, and warm oceans. Kelp typically appears near seagrass. Players can instantly mine kelp using any tool or their bare hands. Breaking part of a kelp stalk destroys all kelp blocks above it, each dropping a kelp item. Kelp can be placed directly underwater or anywhere using commands, manually placed kelp receives a random age value between 0 and 24. Kelp can only be placed in water source blocks or downward-flowing water, not horizontally flowing water. Kelp serves as a fuel source when smelted and crafted into dried kelp blocks, with one dried block smelting 20 items. Kelp can also be composted for bone meal, and dried kelp is consumed faster than other foods. Kelp grows similar to sugar cane, spontaneously growing upwards until the top is one block below the water surface. Its maximum height depends on a random age value, ranging from 2 to 26 blocks tall. Bone meal can speed up kelp growth. Kelp can be automatically farmed using methods including pistons and observers. Furthermore, wandering traders may sell kelp in exchange for emeralds.
