Magma blocks are light-emitting, naturally occurring blocks found in Minecraft, commonly in the Nether and occasionally in the Overworld. They cause continuous damage to entities standing on them, considered fire damage, but do not ignite mobs. Magma blocks can be mined with any pickaxe, dropping nothing if mined without one. In the Overworld, they generate at the bottom of water aquifers in underwater magma features, in clusters of 1–8 blocks. They also appear as part of ocean ruins, trial chambers, and ruined portals not in cold biomes. In the Nether, magma blocks generate in ore-like features. They also generate as part of deltas in basalt deltas biomes, replacing some lava, and within hoglin stables and treasure rooms of bastion remnants, as well as ruined portals. Players take one fire damage every half-second when standing on a magma block. This damage can be avoided by sneaking, wearing boots with the Frost Walker enchantment, or using a Fire Resistance potion. Magma blocks can be placed under note blocks to produce a bass drum sound. When water is above a magma block, a downward whirlpool bubble column is created, allowing players to restore breath underwater.
