Netherrack is a common block in Minecraft, primarily found in the Nether dimension. It is a fragile stone block that makes up the majority of the Nether terrain and can also generate as part of ruined portals in the Overworld. Netherrack can be mined with any pickaxe, but will drop nothing if mined without one. A notable feature of netherrack is that fire lit on its top surface burns indefinitely and cannot be extinguished by rain. This makes it ideal for creating permanent fire sources or decorative flames. Although netherrack itself doesn't have high blast resistance, it can be smelted in a furnace to create nether bricks, which are used for decoration and construction. In some versions of Minecraft, netherrack can be renewed in specific ways, such as generating around floating nether portals in Bedrock Edition. Moreover, analyzing netherrack in a material reducer reveals it to be rich in mercury. As a representative block of the Nether, netherrack plays a significant role in gameplay.
