Coal

In Minecraft, coal is a vital mineral resource primarily obtained by mining coal ore. Coal ore is found widely throughout the world, especially in mountains and caves. When mined, coal ore drops coal, or can be obtained as a block when mined with a Silk Touch enchanted pickaxe. Coal is mainly used for crafting torches and campfires, and as fuel for furnaces. A piece of coal burns for 80 seconds, enough to smelt 8 items. Besides mining, coal can also be obtained by defeating Wither Skeletons or purchasing from villagers. A block of coal is crafted from nine pieces of coal and is used for more efficient coal storage and acts as furnace fuel, burning for 10 times the duration of a single piece of coal, enough to smelt 80 items. Coal is a crucial early-game resource that plays an essential role in survival. There is also a deepslate coal ore variant that is found on top of the deepslate layer which is rare.
