Cocoa beans are an important resource in Minecraft, primarily obtained from mature cocoa pods that naturally generate on jungle trees in jungle biomes. Players can harvest cocoa beans by breaking these pods, with mature pods dropping 3 cocoa beans. In the Java Edition, this is the only way to obtain cocoa beans, while in the Bedrock Edition, they can also be found in bonus chests, obtained from fishing in jungle biomes, or purchased from wandering traders. Cocoa beans can be used to plant new cocoa pods by placing a bean on the side of jungle wood. Cocoa pods have three growth stages: small and green, larger and tan, and largest and orange. Breaking pods in the first two stages yields only one cocoa bean, while mature pods drop three. Bone meal can be used to accelerate pod growth. Furthermore, cocoa beans are a key ingredient in crafting brown dye and cookies. In the Bedrock Edition, they can also be directly substituted for brown dye in many recipes, including banner patterns. Another use of cocoa beans is that they can be placed in a composter, with a 65% chance of increasing the compost level.
