In Minecraft, lingering potions are a unique type of potion, distinct from regular and splash potions. When thrown, a lingering potion creates a persistent cloud on the ground, affecting any player or mob that enters it. This cloud starts with a radius of 3 blocks and gradually decreases over 30 seconds. The cloud's radius also shrinks each time a player or mob enters it, reducing its lifespan. The duration of a lingering potion's effect is one-fourth of the corresponding potion's duration, while effects without duration have their potency halved. For example, a lingering potion of healing can heal more times than a regular or splash potion, provided the user stays within the cloud. Lingering potions are made by combining splash potions with dragon's breath, a rare item obtained after defeating the Ender Dragon. They can also be used to craft tipped arrows, which also inflict potion effects. Additionally, lingering water bottles can extinguish fires, damage endermen and blazes, and in Bedrock Edition, can turn dirt into mud. Lingering potions are a versatile and powerful tool in Minecraft, although creating them requires some effort from the player.
