In Minecraft, a map is an item used to view explored terrain and mark landmarks. Players can craft blank maps using paper or create them at a cartography table. In Bedrock Edition, empty locator maps can also be created using paper and a compass. When a map is first used, it records the surrounding terrain and displays the player's location. The map doesn't center on the player but rather the grid square in which it was first used. Maps update as the player moves within the game world, but only while the player is holding the map. Maps can be zoomed in and out and cloned. In the Java version, map colors are based on the most common blocks in an area, while in the Bedrock version, they are based on the top-most block. Maps in the Nether show as a red and gray pattern and don't accurately show terrain, but they work in the End. Players can use maps to create pixel art and display them in item frames. Additionally, there are special explorer maps that help players locate ocean monuments, woodland mansions, trial chambers, and buried treasures.
