Drowned are a common underwater zombie variant in Minecraft, added in the 1.13 'Update Aquatic'. They typically spawn in oceans, rivers, and dripstone caves, or when zombies drown. Drowned usually attack with melee, but may also be armed with tridents for ranged attacks. They are the only source of tridents in the game, as well as a renewable source of copper. Drowned spawn naturally at light level 0 in all ocean biomes, aquifers in dripstone caves, and river biomes. They spawn at higher rates in rivers and dripstone caves than in ocean biomes. In Java Edition, drowned spawn individually in flowing or source water at least 2 blocks tall, while in ocean biomes, they spawn in groups of 2-4 in any depth of flowing or source water. Drowned have a chance to spawn with a trident or fishing rod, and sometimes a nautilus shell. They are the only zombie variant that does not naturally spawn with armor. When a zombie's head is submerged in water for 30 seconds, it begins to convert into a drowned after 15 seconds. Drowned drop rotten flesh, copper ingots, and any equipped items. Naturally spawned drowned have a chance to drop their trident when killed, with the chance increased by the Looting enchantment. Drowned are aggressive towards turtle eggs and will attack villagers, wandering traders, and iron golems. They stay on the floor of water bodies during the day but swim to the surface to attack players at night or during thunderstorms, even if the players are not in the water.
