Firefly
The firefly is a highly anticipated but ultimately canceled mob in Minecraft. Originally planned for the 1.19 update, fireflies were designed as small, passive creatures that would spawn in swarms in swamp biomes. Their intended purpose was to be eaten by frogs, which would then produce froglights. However, this idea was scrapped due to the fact that some species of fireflies are poisonous to frogs in real life. Despite this, fireflies have still appeared in various Minecraft variations and mods. In Minecraft Dungeons, they appear as ambient mobs, adding to the game's atmosphere. Some mods give fireflies more functionality, such as being able to be captured in bottles for light sources. Additionally, some mods introduce firefly clusters, which spawn in the dark and can be used to make firefly lanterns. Although the original firefly design was not implemented in vanilla Minecraft, players can still experience the fun that fireflies bring in various ways.
