Squids are common passive aquatic mobs in Minecraft, typically spawning in rivers and oceans. In Java Edition, squids spawn in groups in water between Y-levels 50 and 63, as long as the biome is a river or ocean variant. The block above must be water, and the block below must be water or waterlogged. Squids share the water creature mob cap with dolphins. In Bedrock Edition, squids spawn in groups in ocean biomes and in pairs in river biomes. 5% of squids can spawn as babies. Squids do not actively interact with the player and, when attacked, release ink and swim away. They suffocate on land and produce dark blue bubble particles when hit in water. In Bedrock Edition, they can survive on land with the Water Breathing effect but still behave as if on land. Glow squids are variants found in dark underground waters. They have a glowing texture, do not emit actual light, and stop glowing when harmed. They also release turquoise ink. Both squids and glow squids can be farmed for ink sacs through various farm designs, typically by suffocating them out of water or having them killed by other mobs. These farms vary in design, from simple natural traps to complex automated systems.
