Wither skeletons are tall, black variants of skeletons in Minecraft, wielding stone swords and inflicting the Wither effect, a poison-like status. They spawn exclusively in nether fortresses and are the sole source of wither skeleton skulls, essential for summoning the Wither boss, and also a renewable source of coal. Wither skeletons have a height of 2.4 blocks (Java Edition) or 2.412 blocks (Bedrock Edition), with widths of 0.7 or 0.864 blocks, respectively. They are undead mobs, immune to fire and the Wither effect. During Halloween, they have a chance to spawn wearing carved pumpkins or jack o'lanterns. When provoked, wither skeletons sprint and attack players, snow golems, iron golems, baby turtles, piglins, and piglin brutes. Being hit by a wither skeleton inflicts the Wither effect for 10 seconds, darkening and reducing health. They drop coal, bones, stone swords, and the rare wither skeleton skulls. Three skulls are needed to summon the Wither. These mobs are challenging enemies in Minecraft's Nether, and their unique drops make them an integral part of gameplay there.
