Amethyst geodes are rare geological structures in Minecraft that generate underground in the Overworld, typically between Y=-58 and Y=30. They consist of three layers: an outer layer of smooth basalt, a middle layer of calcite, and an inner layer primarily made of amethyst blocks, with some replaced by budding amethyst blocks, upon which amethyst crystals grow. Geodes usually have a crack, exposing the amethyst within. They are the primary source of amethyst shards and amethyst blocks. Amethyst shards are used to craft spyglasses, tinted glass, and amethyst blocks, which serve as decorative building materials emitting a soft purple glow. Players can find geodes by exploring underground caves or diving in deep oceans. They sometimes intersect with caves, aquifers, and canyons, and may even overwrite other structures. Some players use third-party tools like Chunkbase to locate amethyst geodes more efficiently.
