Basalt pillars are tall, naturally occurring structures in Minecraft, primarily made of basalt blocks. They are commonly found in the soul sand valley biome, extending downwards from the ceiling of an area, with a width of one to three blocks. At the base of the pillar, there is typically a flat clump of basalt, forming a 3x3 area, resembling a solidified vertical lava flow. Basalt pillars not only appear in soul sand valleys but also as part of the terrain and basalt columns in the basalt deltas biome. Apart from natural generation, basalt can also be created artificially by flowing lava onto soul soil and adjacent to blue ice. Aside from being used as building materials, basalt can also be placed under note blocks to produce "bass drum" sounds. They serve as significant decorative and structural elements within Minecraft.
