In Minecraft, caves are a common terrain feature typically generated underground, but also found in the Nether. They are open spaces of various sizes and shapes, frequently intersecting with each other or with different generated structures, creating vast cave systems. Caves are rich in mineral resources and are also spawning grounds for hostile mobs, so caution is advised when exploring them. There are two main types of caves: carver caves and noise caves. Carver caves typically consist of a series of irregular tunnels branching off and winding in different directions, sometimes reaching the surface and forming natural entrances. Noise caves, generated using noise, come in various forms like cheese caves, spaghetti caves, and noodle caves, differing greatly in size, shape, and connectivity. Underground water bodies, generated by aquifers and forming lakes and waterfalls, can also be found in caves. Additionally, caves may contain structures like monster rooms, ancient cities, mineshafts, and lava lakes, as well as unique formations like amethyst geodes. The “Caves & Cliffs” update for Minecraft significantly improved cave generation, adding new cave biomes and diversity.
