A Nether portal is a man-made structure in Minecraft that serves as a gateway between the Overworld and the Nether dimension. It is constructed using obsidian in a vertical rectangular frame, with a minimum size of 4x5 and a maximum of 23x23. The four corners of the frame are not required but are included in portals generated by the game. To activate the portal, fire must be ignited inside the frame using flint and steel, a fire charge, or any other fire source. Once activated, the portal displays a purple swirling portal block. Players can teleport to the Nether by standing in the portal for 4 seconds, and vice versa. Nether portals have a travel distance ratio of 8:1 between the Overworld and Nether. This means that moving one block in the Nether equates to moving eight blocks in the Overworld. By strategically positioning portals, players can use this ratio to travel quickly across the Overworld, making it an efficient mode of long-distance travel. Furthermore, Nether portals can transport most entities (except the Wither and the Ender Dragon) from one dimension to another.
