The Badlands, also known as the Mesa biome in Minecraft, are a unique arid landscape characterized by its vibrant terracotta layers and red sand. Badlands typically feature mounds and canyons formed from layers of red, orange, yellow, white, light gray, brown, and regular terracotta. Cacti and dead bushes are common, while trees and grass are scarce, usually only appearing in the Wooded Badlands variant. The surface is often covered in red sand or red sandstone, with orange terracotta underneath extending to Y=63. Underwater areas are covered in orange terracotta, with occasional white terracotta in shallow waters and gravel in deeper areas. Badlands are usually found bordering deserts and savannas, less often near oceans, but can also generate near mountain peaks. They do not experience rain or lightning strikes, although rivers running through them can still have rain and lightning. Mineshafts in Badlands generate at higher elevations and use dark oak supports; gold ore is also more abundant, generating up to Y=255, making it a prime location for gold. There are multiple variations of the Badlands biome, including the Wooded Badlands, which has trees, and the Eroded Badlands, with its distinct hoodoo formations.
