Snowy plains are flat, snow-covered biomes in Minecraft that typically generate near other snowy biomes. Snowy plains are characterized by flatlands covered in layers of snow, often stacked in Bedrock Edition. Due to the low temperature, aquifers and springs in snowy plains freeze over soon after generation unless exposed to light, thus sugar cane generated alongside water sources often uproot themselves shortly after. Lava lakes and lava springs within snowy plains melt the snow layers around them. Snowy plains are often bordered by snowy taigas, snowy beaches, snowy slopes, and groves. Regular snowy plains are often separated from ice spikes or snowy taigas by frozen rivers. Survival in snowy plains is challenging due to the sparseness of the biome and lack of animals, with only polar bears and rabbits naturally spawning. However, cows, sheep, pigs, and horses may spawn as part of villages. Infrequent spruce trees are the only natural source of wood. Maintaining water sources for farming is difficult as water freezes, unless protected by light or a roof. Strays often spawn in place of skeletons, making hostile mob encounters harder due to their Slowness arrows. Aggravating polar bears, especially those with cubs, can lead to fatal consequences. The ice spikes variant is valuable to late-game players due to the occurrence of ice spikes, used for a base or as a source of packed ice blocks. There are two variants of the snowy plains biome: regular snowy plains and ice spikes. Regular snowy plains are grasslands covered with snow layers with infrequent spruce trees, tall grass, dandelions, and poppies. Villages in snowy plains are made of spruce wood, snow blocks, ice, blue ice, and packed ice. Pillager outposts and igloos are also found. Igloos are difficult to spot due to camouflaging with snow layers. The ice spikes variant is rarer and features numerous ice spikes and ice patches. All grass blocks are replaced by snow blocks, so no trees or other vegetation can generate. Snow layers still form atop the snow blocks, making them seem taller. No buildings generate in this biome.
