In Minecraft, Levitation is a status effect that causes entities to float upwards. This effect is inflicted when a player is hit by a shulker's projectile. The Levitation effect causes affected entities to float upward at a rate of 0.9 times the effect level per second. This effect does not affect swimming or flying. In Java Edition, negative levels cause entities to float downwards, overriding gravity. Level zero (amplifier 255) makes falling, jumping, and ascending stairs impossible. Once the levitation effect wears off, the entity will plummet and take fall damage. The Levitation effect does not work in water or when a player is riding another entity. Only withers and ender dragons are immune to this effect, while shulkers and flying mobs can be affected. In Minecraft Education and Bedrock editions, mobs tied with balloons exhibit a similar effect to high-level levitation, although this is not the same effect. Additionally, in Bedrock Edition, blocking a shulker projectile with a shield can still cause the player to receive the Levitation effect. If a player receives a Levitation level above 127, they will fall at different rates depending on the value. If the Levitation level is 255, players hover at their current Y-level, unable to move up or down. The levitation effect can be removed by drinking Milk.
