King Yemma, or Enma Daiō, is a significant character in the Dragon Ball series. He is the boss of all ogres in the Other World and judges the souls of the deceased, deciding whether they go to Heaven or Hell. In the English anime, he is known as King Yemma. He is based on the Hindu deity Yama. A line of souls waits outside his office for his judgment. Compared to other ogres, King Yemma has a distinct color, a beard, a helmet with two horns (it's unclear if the horns are his own or part of the helmet), and a colossal size. His desk is at least three times taller than Goku. King Yemma possesses immense strength, capable of maintaining control in any situation and easily overpowering Raditz. However, as the series progresses and villains grow stronger, his power becomes less impressive. While traces of his existence are seen in early Dragon Ball, such as when Grandpa Gohan was allowed to return for a day in the Fortuneteller Baba Saga, King Yemma first formally appears in early Dragon Ball Z when Goku is killed in the Saiyan Saga and taken to the Other World by Kami for training under King Kai. King Yemma is quite impatient and easily angered, but he's also willing to listen to people's problems. Despite threatening to send Kami to Hell, he was just trying to scare him. He's highly intelligent, sending Dabura to Heaven instead of Hell and allowing Vegeta to keep his body and return to Earth to assist Goku.
