Kai
Original Title:カイ
Languages:
- Chinese: 凯/凯伊
- Japanese: カイ
- English: Kai
In the Dragon Ball series, "Kai" (カイ) refers to the deities who rule over specific regions of the universe. They are gods responsible for overseeing the planetary guardians within their jurisdictions. Typically, there are five Kais, with four controlling the four quadrants of the universe (North, South, East, West), and the fifth, known as the Grand Kai, overseeing all the Kais. The Kais reside in the Other World and are generally considered immortal, although they can die from unnatural causes. While they do not directly engage in battles, the Kais play a significant role in the story by providing wise advice or training. For example, King Kai (North Kai) is Goku's mentor, teaching him powerful techniques like the Kaio-ken and Spirit Bomb. Besides the Kais, there are higher-ranking deities called Supreme Kais, who rule over the entire universe. The design of Kais and Supreme Kais is inspired by the gods who watch over the cardinal directions in Hindu and Buddhist scriptures. Additionally, "Kai Kai" is a teleportation technique that allows users to instantly travel anywhere within the universe, or even to other universes, without needing to lock onto a specific energy signature, unlike Instant Transmission. Characters such as Supreme Kai, Kibito, and Buu have utilized this skill in the Dragon Ball series.
