Heywood L. Edwards, also known as Heywood L.E., is a character from the game "Kantai Collection" (KanColle). She is a Kanmusu based on the USS Heywood L. Edwards (DD-663), a Fletcher-class destroyer of the United States Navy. This destroyer served in World War II, participating in major battles such as the Mariana Islands, Palau Islands, Leyte, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. After the war, the ship was transferred to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and renamed "Ariake" (DD-183). In the game, Heywood L.E. is portrayed as a gentle and meticulous meganekko (glasses girl), fluent in both English and Japanese, with a keen interest in history and culture. She excels in night battles and anti-submarine warfare, playing a vital role in the fleet. Her artwork is distinctive, featuring a white uniform before her Kai modification and a blue one afterward, adorned with medals symbolizing her combat achievements. She has unique hourly voice lines in both English and Japanese, and can offer both American and Japanese-style breakfasts. She also maintains a good relationship with other destroyers like Shigure and Yamashiro.
