Retsu, also known as 烈, is a non-playable character in the Street Fighter series who first appeared as one of the ten computer-controlled opponents in the original Street Fighter game. He was excommunicated from his temple for using forbidden techniques and for his combative tendencies. After encountering a young Ryu, he changed his ways and became an ascetic martial artist. While Retsu has not been a playable character in most Street Fighter games, he remains part of the game's backstory as a friend of Ryu and Ken's teacher, Gouken. He is also acquainted with Dhalsim and has met Oro in the past. In Street Fighter 6, Retsu appears as an opponent in the World Tour mode, using moves similar to Ryu but with a unique jumping kick. He also makes cameos and is featured in a flashback scene with Ryu and Dan at a festival. In the comics, Retsu is an assistant at Goutetsu's dojo and is shown making food for Akuma. Retsu also visited Gouken and informed him about Akuma's awakening and sought out Akuma, eventually reporting back to Gouken. He also sparred with Ryu, testing his abilities but was defeated by a Ryu under the influence of the Satsui no Hado. Though planned to be a playable character in Capcom Fighting Evolution, Retsu was ultimately cut from the game.
