Maya is a character in the Mortal Kombat series, first appearing in the fifth episode "The Essence" of the Mortal Kombat: Conquest TV series. Played by Maria Arcé, she is ironically called "Servant Woman" in the end credits of the episode. Maya is a native of Edenia, a peaceful realm conquered by Shao Kahn and merged with Outworld. She serves as a royal servant to Princess Kitana, as well as a handmaiden to her mistress, Qali, and is approximately 10,000 years old. Like many Edenians, Maya lived under Shao Kahn's iron fist, enduring cruel oppression.
In the series, one of Shao Kahn's Shadow Priests interrogates and tortures Maya, trying to force her to reveal the location of the Essence of Edenia. She is last seen in Shao Kahn's throne room, being tormented with a hot poker. Ultimately, Shao Kahn orders the priest to "shut her up," and she is killed with a blade in front of both Shao Kahn and Qali. Maya's fate highlights Shao Kahn's ruthless brutality and it is implied her soul was stolen, condemning her to eternal torment. Her tragic story underscores the themes of cruelty and violence prevalent in the Mortal Kombat universe.
