Mortal Kombat is an American media franchise centered on a series of fighting video games originally developed by Midway Games in 1992. The franchise has expanded to include comic books, a card game, films, an animated TV series, and live-action tours. The series is renowned for its high levels of graphic violence, particularly its signature "Fatalities," finishing moves that brutally kill defeated opponents. Controversies surrounding Mortal Kombat partly led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) video game rating system. Mortal Kombat is one of the best-selling fighting game franchises worldwide and one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.
The original three games and their updates, Mortal Kombat (1992), Mortal Kombat II (1993), and Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), are 2D fighting games. In the early games, characters played virtually identically, with the main differences being their special moves. From Deadly Alliance to Mortal Kombat: Deception, characters had three fighting styles: two unarmed and one weapon style. Although most styles are based on real martial arts, some are fictitious. For example, Goro's fighting styles take advantage of his four arms. The games also include various minigames, unlockable content, and hidden cheats. The plot of Mortal Kombat is set in a fictional universe of numerous realms created by the Elder Gods. Players control a diverse cast of warriors, competing in martial arts tournaments known as "Mortal Kombat."
