Samurai Shodown V, known as Samurai Spirits Zero in Japan, is a fighting game released by SNK Playmore in 2003, and it is the fifth main installment in the Samurai Shodown series. This title is a prequel to the rest of the series, set two years before the events of the original Samurai Shodown, introducing a new protagonist, Yoshitora Tokugawa, who faces his former mentor, Gaoh. While being a prequel, the storyline does conflict with previous titles in the series. Development of the game was handled by Yuki Enterprise, which caused some concern among fans, but excitement grew after SNK announced that manga artist Nobuhiro Watsuki (Rurouni Kenshin) would design new characters and official artwork. One year later, an updated version, Samurai Shodown V Special, was released, becoming the last commercial game for the Neo Geo platform. The gameplay mechanics were changed; the Slash/Bust system was removed and new elements such as the Sword Gauge were introduced. Despite graphical and musical enhancements, reception was mixed among fans, with some criticizing the new characters and mechanics.
