  • Japanese: 黒子
  • English: Kuroko
Kuroko (黒子) is a character in the Samurai Shodown (also known as Samurai Spirits, サムライスピリッツ) series. He first appeared as a referee in the original Samurai Shodown, officiating matches. Starting from Samurai Shodown II, Kuroko began to challenge players as a hidden boss, continuing to do so in other games of the series. Little is known about Kuroko's origins or background. In Samurai Shodown, he was forced to judge matches as a servant of Amakusa due to his brothers being held hostage. After Amakusa's defeat, Kuroko reunites with his family. One of his brothers had a previous working relationship with Nicotine Caffeine and is well-versed in necromancy. Kuroko's identity is an enigma; it is difficult to determine which brother is under the Kuroko alias at any given time. He may not even be human. He wields a red flag and a white flag as weapons, which cannot be destroyed or lost in battle. In Samurai Shodown II and Samurai Shodown VI, his stance is identical to that of Tung Fu Rue from the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series. He is deemed an extremely powerful character in all of his playable incarnations (aside from handheld versions), and is therefore banned from competitive play.
