Edea Kramer

Edea Kramer, also known as Sorceress Edea or Matron, is a significant character in Final Fantasy VIII. She initially appears as the enigmatic ambassador of Galbadia, but is actually under the mind control of the sorceress Ultimecia from the future, serving as the primary antagonist for the first half of the game. While possessed by Ultimecia, Edea displays a ruthless and power-hungry personality, seeking to dominate the world. However, in reality, Edea is a kind and gentle person who runs an orphanage, where the children affectionately call her “Matron” and hold her in high regard. Edea has possessed sorceress powers since childhood, and later married Cid Kramer, co-creating SeeD and the Gardens. She briefly becomes a playable character in the game, with a unique Limit Break called “Ice Strike.” Edea's design was inspired by an unused "Witch" concept from Final Fantasy VII. She has garnered praise for her complex character and elegant costume design, and is considered one of the most compelling characters in the Final Fantasy series.
