Harpoon

The Harpoon, or ハープーン, in Final Fantasy VIII is a unique weapon primarily used by the character Ward Zabac. It is a large, heavy throwing weapon, similar to a real-world harpoon, capable of inflicting significant physical damage on enemies. Unlike other characters' weapons in the game, the Harpoon cannot be upgraded or modified, but its base damage is quite high. Ward, a member of Laguna Loire's team, is known for his immense strength and distinctive fighting style using the harpoon. This weapon is iconic to Ward and closely tied to his character's backstory. In the game, the harpoon is not only a combat tool but also an essential part of Ward's characterization, highlighting his unique role as a power-based character. In Final Fantasy VIII, weapons are not the primary means of directly enhancing character stats. Instead, combat power is improved by using the junction system, which binds magic to character attributes. The harpoon is no exception to this rule.
