In Final Fantasy VIII, "Meteor Strike," known as メテオストライク in Japanese, is a technique within Zell's Limit Break, "Duel." It's a physical Gravity-type attack that deals 25% of an enemy's current health as damage, capped at 9999, but it will miss if the target is immune to Gravity damage. This move becomes visible in the command window after reading "Combat King 002," but it can be used from the start of the game by inputting the correct button combination. Meteor Strike is input with a combination of as part of a Duel chain. It is Zell's only move that deals damage based on the target's current HP. Additionally, Zell has a finishing move called "Meteor Barret," known as メテオバレット, which is a different move and does physical damage based on Zell’s strength.
Meteor Strike's inspiration may come from Sabin's "Suplex" or "Meteor Strike" in Final Fantasy VI and Tifa's similar moves in Final Fantasy VII. In Final Fantasy VIII, its uniqueness lies in its damage mechanism based on the target's current health, making it more effective against high-HP enemies but ineffective against bosses that are immune to Gravity-type damage, thereby limiting its usefulness.
