Cactuar (Japanese: サボテンダー, Sabotendā) is a recurring iconic creature in the Final Fantasy series. They are typically depicted as anthropomorphic cacti with haniwa-like faces in a running or dashing pose. First appearing as an enemy in Final Fantasy VI, they have since appeared in nearly every game in the series, sometimes as summons or friendly non-player characters. In Final Fantasy VIII, Cactuars appear both as enemies and as a summonable Guardian Force. As enemies, they are known for being difficult to hit and having high evasion, often using their signature move, "1000 Needles," which deals a fixed 1000 damage. As a Guardian Force, Cactuar can inflict fixed damage based on its level using "1000 Needles" and can learn abilities that boost evasion and luck. In Final Fantasy VIII, the player must defeat the Jumbo Cactuar to obtain the Cactuar Guardian Force, which is a powerful asset in the later stages of the game. Cactuars have become popular for their unique design and high evasion, becoming a widely recognized monster within the Final Fantasy series, and are featured in various merchandise and cultural works.
