Gilgamesh is a recurring character in the Final Fantasy series, notably appearing as a pseudo-Guardian Force in Final Fantasy VIII. He was first introduced as an antagonist in Final Fantasy V and has since appeared in numerous titles as an ally, an optional boss, a summoned monster, and more, making him one of the most recurring characters in the series. Gilgamesh is a wandering swordsman with a passion for collecting famous and powerful swords. Notable traits include his love for collecting weapons, especially swords and katanas, such as Excalibur and its imitation, Excalipoor. He is often depicted seeking Excalibur and mistakenly believing the Excalipoor to be the real thing. In Final Fantasy VIII, Gilgamesh replaces Odin as a randomly appearing Guardian Force, and his attacks involve randomly choosing one of his swords, potentially dealing massive damage or only a trivial amount. His personality is typically boastful, flamboyant, and yet somewhat clumsy and humorous, often making errors and mistaking counterfeits. Despite this, he is a warrior who enjoys challenges and acknowledges strong opponents.
