Final Fantasy VIII is a role-playing video game developed by Square (now Square Enix) and released for the PlayStation in 1999, it is the eighth main installment in the Final Fantasy series. The game is set in a fantasy world with science fiction elements, and it follows a group of young mercenaries led by Squall Leonhart as they are drawn into a conflict sparked by a sorceress named Edea Kramer. Throughout the quest, Squall grapples with his leadership role and develops a romance with Rinoa Heartilly. The battle system features a unique "Junction" system where players can equip magic and summoned monsters called Guardian Forces (GF) to characters to enhance their stats and abilities. It deviates from traditional Final Fantasy conventions, by forgoing magic points, and instead using the 'Draw' system where spells are drawn from enemies, or created from items. The game is also notable for its use of realistically proportioned characters and a vocal theme song, "Eyes on Me". The "Full-life" spell is an advanced restoration magic that revives a character with full HP, considered much more powerful than "Life," which only revives characters with minimal HP. The "Araise" spell, a common restoration spell in the Final Fantasy series, also serves to revive a fallen character completely.
