Thundara, written as サンダラ in Japanese, is a mid-level Thunder elemental magic spell in Final Fantasy VIII. It is the second tier of Thunder magic, falling between the lower-level Thunder and the higher-level Thundaga. Thundara can be used as an attack spell to deal moderate Thunder damage to enemies, or it can be 'junctioned' to a character's stats to increase their resistance to Thunder or boost their Thunder damage output. Players can acquire Thundara in the game by 'drawing' it from enemies or by refining items. Thundara can be obtained in multiple ways, including drawing it from specific enemies in battle or refining it from items or lower-level Thunder spells using the Guardian Force Quezacotl's abilities. In Final Fantasy VIII, magic is not used based on traditional Magic Points (MP), but rather as stored items. Players can store quantities of Thundara and expend them in battle. Thundara is a useful spell early in the game for both offense and defense. Later on, when Thundaga becomes more accessible, Thundara is often refined into higher-level magic. Also, casting Thundara affects the compatibility between characters and summons. Casting Thundara slightly increases compatibility with Guardian Force Quezacotl, while decreasing it with Leviathan and Eden.
