Silence

Original Title:サイレス

Languages:

  • Chinese: 沉默
  • Japanese: サイレス
  • English: Silence
In Final Fantasy VIII, "Silence" (サイレス in Japanese) is both a spell and a status effect. As a spell, it can be used by both enemies and players to prevent a target from casting spells. The spell can be acquired by drawing it from enemies, refining items, and it can be stocked on characters for direct use or to enhance character stats via the "Junction" system. When a character is afflicted with the "Silence" status, they are unable to use Magic, Draw, or Guardian Force (GF) commands, indicated by an ellipsis (...) above their head in battle. While useful against enemies that cast spells, many bosses are immune to it. Silence can be resisted through equipment and healed by items or spells. In terms of game mechanics, "Silence" is one of the few spells that can inflict the status, though it's often considered inferior to the "Pain" spell, which inflicts Silence, Darkness, and Poison.
