In Final Fantasy VIII, 'Berserk' (バーサク) is a magic spell and status effect. As a spell, it can be cast to inflict the Berserk status, where the character loses control and can only perform physical attacks, but with a 50% increase in attack power. This status can be applied through spells, items, or special abilities, and can also be resisted by certain items and abilities. In battle, a berserked character attacks enemies randomly until the battle ends or the status is cured. In addition to being a magical effect, Berserk can also be used as status defense; a certain number of spells can grant immunity to the Berserk status. In the game, Berserk can be added to attacks by junctioning it to 'ST-Atk-J' or used to resist it by junctioning to 'ST-Def-J'. Furthermore, in the 2013 PC re-release, using the 'Magic Booster' allows players to acquire 100 Berserk spells. Berserk can be refined from steel pipes using the Guardian Force Diablos' ability. The Berserk status increases a character's attack power but causes them to lose control. While it can be useful against enemies that are weak to physical attacks, a better option may be to use Silence or Sleep, which are more versatile. Berserk can also be used to enhance physical attacks, but a better alternative is the 'Mad Rush' ability, which applies the effect to all party members at once, along with Haste and Protect.
