"Final Fantasy VIII" is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) in 1999 for the PlayStation console. It is the eighth main installment in the Final Fantasy series. The game is set on a world that blends fantasy and science fiction elements, and follows a group of young mercenaries led by Squall Leonhart as they are drawn into a conflict sparked by a sorceress named Edea Kramer. During their quest to defeat the sorceress and those manipulating her, Squall confronts his inner demons and develops a romance with Rinoa Heartilly. "Final Fantasy VIII" introduced several innovations to the series. It was the first Final Fantasy title to consistently use realistically proportioned characters, and the first to feature a vocal piece as its theme music. The battle system was also significantly revamped, doing away with the traditional magic points system and instead allowing players to 'draw' magic from enemies and store them, while also utilizing a 'Junction' system to enhance characters. Additionally, the game introduced unique 'Guardian Forces' (GF) summon system and a collectible card-based minigame called "Triple Triad". These changes made "Final Fantasy VIII" a distinctive entry in the series. In the game, "Scan" is a magic spell that reveals information about an enemy's stats and weaknesses, serving as a useful support tool in battle. While it is not particularly effective at boosting character stats, it's crucial for exploring the game world and understanding enemy information. "Libra" is the Japanese name for the in-game spell or skill that is similar to Scan. In Final Fantasy series, Libra usually means a magic or skill that can obtain information about enemies or battles.
