"Final Fantasy VIII" is a role-playing video game developed by Square (now Square Enix) and released in 1999, the eighth main installment in the Final Fantasy series. Set in a fantasy world with science fiction elements, the game follows Squall Leonhart, a mercenary, and his companions as they become embroiled in a conflict sparked by the sorceress Edea Kramer. The game features realistically proportioned characters and is the first in the series to include a vocal theme song, "Eyes on Me." "Final Fantasy VIII" introduces the unique "Junction system," where players enhance character stats by linking summons called "Guardian Forces" (GFs) and "drawing" magic from enemies and the environment, rather than using traditional magic points. Characters can also perform "Limit Breaks" when low on health. The game also has a collectible card mini-game called "Triple Triad." "Final Fantasy VIII" was a commercial success, selling over 9.6 million copies worldwide as of August 2019. The game has been re-released multiple times, including a high-definition remaster in 2019.
