Final Fantasy VIII, known in Japan as Final Fantasy VIII (ファイナルファンタジーVIII), is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the PlayStation console in 1999. The eighth main installment in the Final Fantasy series, the game is set on an unnamed fantasy world with science fiction elements, following a group of young mercenaries led by Squall Leonhart as they are drawn into a conflict sparked by a sorceress named Edea Kramer. During their quest to defeat the sorceress, Squall grapples with his role as leader and develops a romance with Rinoa Heartilly. Final Fantasy VIII builds upon the visual style established by Final Fantasy VII, utilizing 3D graphics and pre-rendered backgrounds while departing from many series traditions. It's the first Final Fantasy to consistently use realistically proportioned characters, feature a vocal theme song, and forgo magic points. The 'Junction system' allows for character customization by equipping magic and Guardian Forces (GF). Limit Breaks trigger when characters are low on health. The game features a unique experience point system where enemy levels scale with the party's average level. The 'Hero's Medicine' (英雄の薬) is an item obtainable through various means such as monster drops, stealing, item refinement, or the Chocobo mini-game. It can be used in item refinement or weapon modification.
