The magic system in Final Fantasy VIII differs from other entries in the series. It does not use the traditional magic point (MP) consumption mechanism, but instead, magic is obtained by “drawing” it from enemies or the environment, and then stored in an inventory. Each character can store up to 32 different spells, with a maximum of 100 units per spell. These spells can be used in battle, but also connected to character attributes through the “Junction” system to enhance their stats like strength, defense, magic, etc. The stat bonuses provided by different spells vary, so carefully planning and combining spells is crucial in battle. The game also has a “Guardian Force” (GF) system; the GFs possess magic abilities. By junctioning different GFs, characters can use more powerful magic skills, further enriching combat strategies. The magic system in Final Fantasy VIII is highly unique, serving as one of its core gameplay mechanics and providing players with a great deal of customization.
