In Final Fantasy VIII, "Doom" (Japanese: しのせんこく) is a status ailment and a command ability. As a status ailment, it places a countdown on a target, and the target dies when the countdown reaches zero. As a command ability, it can be learned by the Guardian Force Shiva and used to inflict this status on enemies. The status is typically not removable by conventional means, and must be waited out or the battle must end. Some enemies also use Doom, but players can resist or become immune through certain means. Doom appears in other titles in the series with similar effects, all involving a countdown to death. In Final Fantasy VIII, Doom lasts for 16 seconds and does not affect undead enemies or bosses. In combat, players might find faster methods, such as instant death magic, to defeat enemies. The Guardian Force Doomtrain's attack also includes the Doom effect, inflicting a variety of status ailments on enemies.
Final Fantasy VIII, developed by Square in 1999, is the eighth main installment in the series. Set in a fantasy world with science fiction elements, the story follows Squall Leonhart and his comrades as they get embroiled in a conflict sparked by the sorceress Edea Kramer. The game introduced a unique Junction system, replacing traditional magic points; players draw magic from enemies or craft it from items, then junction it to character stats to enhance them. The gameplay also features Guardian Forces and Limit Breaks.
