LV Down

In Final Fantasy VIII, "LV Down" is a command ability that allows players to lower an enemy's level during battle. It is the counterpart to the "LV Up" ability. This ability is learned by the Guardian Force Tonberry, which is obtained after defeating enough Tonberries at Centra Ruins, followed by defeating the Tonberry King. Using "LV Down" can effectively reduce an enemy's stats, weaken their combat capabilities, and influence the type of items that can be mugged or won, as well as the spells that can be drawn. Although bosses and certain other enemies are immune, "LV Down" is very useful against regular enemies, as it can be used repeatedly and its effect does not wear off, and the level of the enemies will be halved with each use, up to the minimum level of 1. Characters equipped with the ability will not use it if confused. Players can use the Scan ability to check a target's current level. In some instances, "LV Down" can be used to manipulate enemy levels to make them drop specific items, such as reducing Grendels and T-Rexaurs to levels where they yield Dragon Fangs, or lowering Ruby Dragons to a level where they will not use Meteor.
