Auto-Shell

In Final Fantasy VIII, "Auto-Shell" is a support ability that grants a character a permanent "Shell" status during battle. This status halves magic damage taken but also halves magic healing received. The ability is learned by the Guardian Force Doomtrain for 250 AP. To obtain Doomtrain, players must find the Solomon Ring at Tears' Point and have the necessary items (six Remedy+, Steel Pipe, and Malboro Tentacle). Additionally, Auto-Shell can be taught to other Guardian Forces using the Moon Curtain item, which can be crafted from 20 Magic Armlets or 100 Malboro Tentacles using Eden's GFAbl Med-RF ability. The permanent Shell status provided by Auto-Shell cannot be dispelled and persists even if a character is KO'd and revived. Visually, a light barrier is shown when the character is struck by a magic attack or healing spell. While other methods can bestow Shell, like the Shell spell or Quistis's Mighty Guard, their duration is limited. Auto-Shell is particularly useful in the late game against tough bosses and enemies, effectively reducing magic damage.
