In Final Fantasy VIII, "Mug" (Japanese: ぶんどる) is a unique ability that combines attacking and stealing. Unlike the "Steal" command in other games of the series, Final Fantasy VIII does not have a separate "Steal" command. Instead, players must equip Guardian Forces (GFs) that have learned the "Mug" ability and replace the "Attack" command to use it. When a battle character with the "Mug" ability attacks, they have a chance of stealing an item from the enemy. The success rate of this ability is affected by the character's Luck stat. A higher Luck stat increases the chance of stealing successfully. Even if the attack misses the enemy, the stealing action can still be successful. Also in Final Fantasy VIII, enemies that have been “Mugged” do not drop items after the battle. The Guardian Forces Diablos and Bahamut learn this ability for 200 AP. "Mug" is the only way to steal items in Final Fantasy VIII and is a critical method of obtaining rare items.
