Cover

In Final Fantasy VIII, "Cover" is a support ability where a character equipped with it shields an adjacent party member from a single-target physical attack, taking half the damage themselves. This ability can be combined with other reaction abilities and the "Defend" command. The Guardian Force Brothers learns "Cover" for 100 AP, and it can be taught to other GFs using the Knight's Code, which can be refined from five Holy Wars using Eden's GFAbl Med-RF. "Cover" activates when a party member receives a single-target physical attack that would be lethal, even if the coverer dies in the process. A character with "Cover" is best placed in the middle of the party to protect both sides. It also works with "Counter", "Defend", and "Auto-Potion" to increase defence and survival. Players can also use it to protect party members who are intentionally kept at low HP to trigger limit breaks.
