In Final Fantasy VIII, the "Boost" (おうえん) ability is a unique mechanic used to enhance the summon attacks of Guardian Forces (GF). Unlike previous Final Fantasy titles, GF attacks are not fixed; they can be boosted by timed button presses during the summon animation. Players must accurately press the button when prompted on screen, with each successful press increasing the attack power up to 2.5 times the base damage. However, pressing the button at the wrong time decreases the damage, potentially reducing it to 75% of the base value. This interactive mechanic adds a layer of engagement to battles and makes summoning more challenging.
All junctionable GFs possess this ability, except for Diablos, Carbuncle, Cerberus, and Cactuar, whose effects either deal no damage or a set amount of damage. The Boost mechanic encourages players to pay closer attention to battle details and to use Guardian Forces' powers effectively. Players need to learn this ability by obtaining Ability Points (AP) from battles. Once learned, they can attempt to use it when summoning a Guardian Force. The success of Boost entirely depends on the player’s reaction speed and dexterity. This mechanic transforms summoning from a simple animation into a strategic and interactive part of the battle experience.
