I Mag-RF

I Mag-RF, or 'Ice Magic Refiner,' is a crucial menu ability in Final Fantasy VIII, allowing players to transform specific items into ice and water-elemental magic. This ability is learned by the Guardian Force Shiva for 30 AP. By using 'I Mag-RF,' players can more easily obtain high-tier spells without relying on drawing from enemies. Ice magic is very useful early in the game, as several early bosses and monsters (such as Ifrit and T-Rexaur) are vulnerable to ice. Players can acquire 'Arctic Winds' for refining by fighting Glacial Eyes near Balamb Garden; or by playing Triple Triad, transforming Snow Lion cards into 'North Winds' for higher-tier ice magic. Water magic is also a powerful early spell, with refining materials including Fish Fins obtained by defeating fish on the world map beach, or 'Water Crystals' via card transformations. Properly utilizing this ability can significantly enhance the party's combat effectiveness early in the game.
