The Chocobo Forests in Final Fantasy VIII are optional locations where players can catch chocobos for use in the game. Among the seven Chocobo Forests, six of them contain puzzles that need to be solved to catch a chocobo. The forests are interconnected, allowing players to ride chocobos caught in any forest to reach the others. If players prefer not to solve the puzzles, they can pay Chocoboy 1,200 Gil to catch one, though this does not count towards the Chocobo Sanctuary reward. To earn that reward, players must befriend all the chocobos by completing the minigame in every forest without paying Chocoboy, and find each forest's treasure. The Basics Forest is located on Trabia's Sorbald Snowfield, roughly south of Shumi Village, on the same landmass as Trabia Garden. In this forest, players need to use a special whistle (ChocoZiner) in a specific sequence to summon and dismiss chicobos, ultimately leaving only one to summon the mother chocobo. The treasure in the Basics Forest is a Flare Stone, found on the left side of the forest. The player must first summon five chicobos into the clearing, then dismiss the two in the back, and then dismiss the ones in the front and right, leaving only one chicobo in the lower-left corner to successfully capture.
