Timber in Final Fantasy VIII is not a hill, but a city located on the Galbadia Continent. It was once an independent country but was invaded by the neighboring nation of Galbadia 18 years ago and has been under martial law since. Many residents of Timber have joined resistance groups in an attempt to regain their independence. The city is known for its numerous train lines and television broadcasting studio, and is also home to a publishing company called Timber Maniacs. Timber’s architecture blends new and old, with stone-made houses and stores contrasting with a futuristic TV station. Galbadian troops maintain order in Timber, but the city has never truly prospered due to citizen resistance. The city's name derives from the surrounding woods, and its complicated history is reflected in the mix of Galbadian and Timber crests within the city. In the story, the protagonists come to Timber to assist the resistance group known as the Forest Owls and become involved in a plot to kidnap the Galbadian President. The Timber Forest is located north of the city and is an area where enemies can be encountered.
