Cockatrice

The Cockatrice (コカトリス) is a recurring enemy in Final Fantasy VIII. This bird-like creature uses physical attacks. When alone, it can use Electric Discharge to damage the party or inflict Petrify on a member. It can also counter magic attacks with Petrify. The Cockatrice drops Dynamo Stones, which increase compatibility with Quezacotl, and Coral Fragments, which teach Quistis the Blue Magic spell Electrocute. In the Triple Triad minigame of Final Fantasy VIII, the Cockatrice is the final Level 1 Monster Card. It can be used for playing the minigame and can be turned into Cockatrice Pinions with Quezacotl’s Card Mod, further refining the pinions into the Break spell. The Cockatrice’s design also draws from the mythological creature of the same name, known for its petrifying gaze, and it is a recurring enemy throughout the series.
