Iguion, also known as Shumeruke (シュメルケ), is a recurring enemy in Final Fantasy VIII. They first appear as a pair of bosses, fought by Squall Leonhart and Irvine Kinneas. These two Iguions are statues brought to life by Sorceress Edea to kill Rinoa Heartilly. They are immune to Fire attacks but are weak to Earth attacks. Their main attack is "Magma Breath," a Fire-elemental attack that can petrify targets. Additionally, the Guardian Force Carbuncle can be drawn from Iguion. Iguion also appears in the Triple Triad card game, where the player can obtain them through card battles or from specific enemies under certain conditions. The card can be refined into a Cockatrice Pinion. The design of Iguion may have been inspired by the mušḫuššu from Sumerian mythology, mixing scales and lion-like traits. The Japanese name, "シュメルケ," may derive from the German word "schmelzen" (to melt).
